At work, we’ve been required to set security at “require password to wake” option. I stumbled across the solution others have mentioned, too, but activated it under the Dashboard & Expose tab. It’s the same hot corners, but I think of it as an extension of expose rather than a screensaver function. Obviously, then the F key options work as alternatives.
I also use the hot corners approach to locking my Mac screen, but it doesn’t always work for some reason (on my aging PowerBook, sometimes the screensaver just won’t come on). Thanks very much for the tip about the Keychain menubar item!
hello …
just wanted to put in a quick note to say that i’ve been listening to the show for past few months and the show rocks …
also wanted to let you know that i’ve not been able to download the latest show …
it shows up on my itunes feed … and it says it has completed download …
but when i try to listen … its only the first 15 mins or so …
i tried twice … and with its the same …
so gotta have to download the show manually this time …
anyways … good show … and keep it up …
appreciated …
Wow, I came here to post exactly the same idea as you guys. I love hot corners and it’s the one thing I add to every Windoze machine I am forced to use at work. I always have the top right as screensaver on and top left as prevent screensaver.
The only really annoying thing I find is that if you watch a vide full screen and then park the mouse top left (or move it if pre-parked then re-park it) the menu bar appears and will not go away.

There are two additional ways to immediately lock the screen.
1. In Security preferences set “require password to wake”. In the Desktop preferences, set a hot corner for the screen saver. Then all you need to do is to move the cursor to the screen saver activation corner.
2. In the Login Options of the Accounts preferences enable fast user switching. Then you can switch immediately to the the Login Window from the account name in the menu bar.
I am in the middle of listening to the podcast, and came on to post about the locking feature (recent Windows switcher here too) with Hot Corner. I always used to use Windows Key L on my Windows machine to lock it, and now I just use Hot Corner with a password protected screensaver.
